My Name is Christina and I Am a Fabric Crusher

If the title of this post reads like an introduction at a 12-step intervention program, it's because... well... it is. I have an addiction. Like most modern sewists, I have a large, overflowing fabric stash. And yet, each time I visit my favorite fabric shop ⏤ Fabric Crush near Ottawa in Richmond, Ontario ⏤ I cannot keep myself from buying more!

I first discovered Fabric Crush through the Sew Ottawa Facebook group. So many members of the group were posting about this shop in the various threads, I just had to check it out for myself...and I am so glad I did! Owner Jenna-Rae Smith is sweet, down-to-earth, and oh-so-knowledgeable about all things sewing. While her shop is small, her selection of fabrics is carefully curated, the choices and quality are amazing, and she has some of the coolest notions I've come across.

The very first time I met Jenna-Rae, I immediately felt comfortable with her ⏤ so much so that I found myself actually admitting to her that despite having sewn for over 40 years, I had never sewn <gulp> knits. I think that when it comes to sewing, many of us are intimidated by particular tasks we've never done before. It's not that they're hard, or require some sort of magic knowledge ⏤ it's just that we talk ourselves into believing that they're much harder than they really are. When I bared my soul to Jenna-Rae, she laughed her trademark giggle, and said very matter-of-factly, "You just need to take our class." And so I did.

My grandson now has the cutest pair of Gran-made underwear. 😃 Easy-peasy!

And then... I made a dress!

Who knew that sewing knits was so easy?!?!?! 😂

Fabric Crush offers an intimate learning environment, with no more than six students at a time. The collaboration among the students, and the knowledge and support ofered by the instructors are excellent. I cannot imagine learning a new skill in a more positive environment. (At one class, I even got to cuddle a wee baby girl while her momma finished up some final touches on her garment!)

Of course, discovering the joy of sewing knits means that my stash, which once contained only beautiful wovens, now contains a slew of beautiful knits too. And I just can't wait to transition these fabrics into wonderful me-made garments! At Fabric Crush, I have purchased beautiful stretch sateen, jersey, poly spandex knits, French terry stretch cotton, the softest buffalo plaid flannel, and of course, lovely cottons and cotton blends... and I love them all.

Everyone I've encountered at Fabric Crush ⏤ Jenna-Rae, her course instructors, and all of the customers that I've met through classes, the Fabric Crush/Fabric Crushers Facebook groups, and in the store ⏤ are hands-down the kindest, most enthusiastic, supportive, and funniest people ... MY people.

If you're in the Ottawa area, stop in and experience the Fabric Crush difference. You'll be glad you did.
